Presidents Message: Roger Meier, GCS
When I look back on my tenure with the Kentuckiana Golf Course Superintendents I am amazed
that it has spanned over nine years. A lot of things have transpired over those years and the men that
served this association before me have done great things to make the KGCSA one of the most successful
affiliated chapters within the GCSAA. I wish to continue our success over the next two years of my term
and hope we can make our association even stronger.
It hasn’t been all positive and encouraging over the years as we have faced great challenges within our
industry. Outside of our industry challenges we all find ourselves consumed in many activities outside of
our profession which involves so much more of our time. We have certainly seen that trend over the years
within our association as participation and attendance has decreased at many of our meetings. Despite
these challenges our association and its leaders and members continue to persevere. I have talked with
countless people who are always impressed with how our association is run and the meetings we
hold. Look at this past Assistants meeting in November at Louisville Country Club. We had a fantastic
agenda and 61 golf industry professionals attended. This was a record setting meeting for us and I believe
we can continue to have this kind of success into the future.
The 2016 Officers and Board have already met and have begun working on our goals for the coming
year. Please take a minute to read the newsletter and get to know your fellow peers who are representing
you on the KGCSA board. I have challenged this board with several tasks and goals for the coming year
and years ahead. I appreciate all of them taking time out of their busy schedules to serve on the
board. These men are passionate about the future of the association, their profession and the game of
golf. As a team and under my direction we will be working on several key items. First, we will be
creating an operating budget for the Association. Not only is this good business but it allows for us to be
more transparent with our members. Second, we will be working very closely with GCSAA in creating a
Strategic Plan for the KGCSA. This plan will allow us to establish framework, focus on accomplishing
specific goals and broaden member involvement. Third we will conduct an in depth review of our
membership to ensure we are complying with the GCSAA Affiliation Agreement. All Class A and
Superintendent Members must be members of an affiliated chapter. We want to be sure we know who is
participating and who isn’t and be sure to capture any potential members who are missing out on the
opportunity of being a part of our association. Last I want to be sure that we work on a program for the
year that focuses on our meetings that have been most successful and add the most value to our members
and association. Communication to our members is very important to our success and participation. This
will be done on many different fronts to ensure we are getting you the information that is important to our
members. Our website, twitter, the associations’ app, our newsletter and continued email blasts will be
important in driving participation.
We have a lot to accomplish over the next year and a lot of exciting opportunities for the association. The
board will be addressing our associations’ by-laws to ensure they are compliant with changes that are
being made within GCSAA. The KGCSA will also be working this year with the KTC as they are
partnering with the GIE Expo next fall. There are some very exciting opportunities for the KGCSA and
KTC in this partnership.
As we approach the holiday season I hope everyone will find the time to relax and spend quality time with
friends and family. The 2016 season will be upon us before we know it.

Respectfully,
Roger Meier
GCS, Valhalla Golf Club
